• 4th of July

The U.S. celebrates Independence Day on the fourth of July. The word “July” is an example of the fact that a letter of the alphabet in the spelling of a word can represent more than one spoken sound in English. The -y letter at the end of a word is often an “ee” sound as in the word “city”, but in the word “July” it’s an “ai” sound as in the word “ice”.
